King George Terrace

Victoria, BC • 1975
On a challenging lot, 39 feet wide with a drop of 100 feet from the street to the waters of Shoal Bay, this residence spares a huge 350 year-old Arbutus tree while providing 2,000 square feet of space arranged in a lofty zig-zag of split levels. At only 24 feet wide, the house is sited further back from the road than its neighbours with a walkway leading through an oriental-inspired courtyard to the entrance sundeck. The house’s six levels are connected by an open cedar staircase. Rooms permit views from one level to another and combined with the extensive use of glass on both ends, gives a tremendous feeling of space and light. All interior and exterior walls are white, providing a striking contrast for the natural surroundings.
