UVic Eng Lab Wing

A four storey building with sophisticated electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science and fuel cell laboratories. It is linked to the Engineering Office Wing, also by WDa. The building uses advanced architectural and engineering systems, including high performance exterior glazing that reduces heat gain and eliminates the requirement for heating. Light shelves bring daylighting deep into the building. Together with infra-red sensors that control lighting and ventilation based on occupancy they provide additional operating cost savings. These systems dramatically reduce operating costs and reduce energy consumption. The building is a recipient of a 1995 BC Hydro Power Smart Award. It was featured in Canadian Architect magazine, July 1996. and in the Rocky Mountain Institute publication “Green Development”.
